Professional Development with Mohawk Artist Shelley Niro

Thursday, June 8, 8:30 a.m.–3:00 p.m.

Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, One Bowling Green, New York, NY

Registration is required.

Join the Education Department of the National Museum of the American Indian in New York for a full-day professional development program with multidisciplinary artist Shelley Niro (Six Nations Reserve, Bay of Quinte Mohawk, Turtle Clan). This program is offered in conjunction with the opening of her first major retrospective exhibition, Shelley Niro: 500 Year Itch.

Shelley Niro: 500 Year Itch celebrates more than a half century of Niro’s paintings, photographs, mixed-media works, and films. Accessible, often humorous, and peppered with references to popular culture, her art digs deep into the timeless cultural knowledge and generational histories of her Six Nations Kanyen’kehá:ka (Mohawk) community to provide purpose and healing.

All attendees will receive certificates of participation. New York State public school teachers are eligible to receive CTLE credit. A light breakfast will be provided.
